Defining the Global Liberal Arts College for the Twenty-First Century

What is the Initiative?

Making Middlebury the first truly global liberal arts college

The Middlebury Initiative builds on the College’s established strengths to extend its reach and influence, expand the range of opportunities available to its students, and secure Middlebury’s position as the global liberal arts college for the 21st century. It is based on four guiding principles:

  • The liberal arts are the foundation for Middlebury’s excellence, with a curriculum ensuring breadth of inquiry, disciplinary depth, and the development of critical analytical skills.
  • Middlebury students and graduates are leaders in a global society. The College has assembled an array of resources that complement the liberal arts curriculum and create exceptional opportunities for students to explore interests and issues extending beyond our national borders.
  • The College is characterized by a supportive culture for creativity, innovation, and intellectual risk-taking. Our students have unparalleled support from faculty mentors and multiple opportunities to hone their creativity and problem-solving skills outside the classroom.
  • A dynamic learning environment enriches the educational experience inside and outside the classroom. Middlebury’s diverse campus community represents many ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, ensuring that students encounter a broad range of perspectives shaped by experiences different from their own.

Middlebury’s strategic plan is designed to expand opportunities for students and make Middlebury the first truly global liberal arts college. It is the map that shows us where we need to go. The Middlebury Initiative is the vehicle that will take us there.

The Initiative has four key priorities:
